The table summarises the structural difference, but it leaves out the physical cost. A 4-3-3 demands repeated work from the central midfielders, disciplined pressing angles from the wide forwards, and a synchronised trigger sequence. A winger who presses too early can open the pass inside. An eight who arrives late can leave the pivot facing two opponents. A full-back who overlaps without cover can turn an attacking phase into a clean counter-attacking lane for the other side.

Klopp’s 38-match usage of the 4-3-3 is not merely a formation preference. It is a conditioning programme expressed as a line-up. Continuity matters because a high press depends on shared timing more than individual appetite. Interpreting expected goals in tactical evaluation

Expected goals assigns each shot a probability between 0 and 1, based on historical-shot information. Opta's published methodology, dated 8 August 2023, indicates that the model evaluates more than 20 pre-shot variables, including distance to goal, angle to goal, goalkeeper position and the shooter's view of goal. The model is trained on nearly one million historical shots, and the resulting probability is the share of comparable historical shots that ended in a goal. A 0.10 xG value, on Opta's scale, means a comparable chance is scored about 10 per cent of the time, or roughly once per ten attempts.

A team with a higher match xG total has taken higher-quality shots, on average. It has not, in itself, won the game. The interpretive risk is straightforward: xG measures shot quality, not match outcome. A side can record a higher xG and lose, because finishing is a separate, lower-volume process; another side can record a lower xG and win, because defending is not measured inside the xG model at all.

The same caution applies when xG is used to judge a pressing model. A high season total may be consistent with a team creating valuable chances after high recoveries, but it does not establish that the press was the cause. Chances may arrive through patient possession, set pieces, individual actions, opposition errors in other areas, or transitions that began much deeper. The formation might have helped create the conditions; the number does not identify the mechanism on its own.

To assess whether pressing is actually contributing to attacking output, xG needs company. Useful accompanying evidence includes:

  • the location and frequency of possession regains;
  • the number of recoveries in the attacking third;
  • how quickly shots follow those regains;
  • whether the opposition’s build-up is being forced toward the touchline or into rushed central passes;
  • the team’s rest-defence shape when a press fails.

When combined with pressing maps, regains in the attacking third, the share of possessions that start with a recovery in the opposition half, and field-tilt share, xG becomes one coordinate in a multi-coordinate description of a match. It can help assess whether a side is producing worthwhile chances while applying pressure high up the pitch. It cannot, by itself, confirm that the pressing structure produced those chances, nor can it prove one starting shape structurally superior to another.

Klopp's 2021/22 Liverpool side illustrates the distinction. The team's first-choice shape was 4-3-3; pressing was a central part of its attacking model; and xG could describe the quality of chances created across matches. But the causal link has to be tested through the sequence: where did the ball change hands, how many passes followed the recovery, who occupied the dangerous zones, and what did the opposition defensive shape look like at the moment of the shot? The 4-3-3 was the structural frame. The press, the wide-forwards' pinning runs and the midfielders' supporting positions were mechanisms. xG was evidence about chance quality, not a verdict on the formation.

Final position

English football formations have rotated under the same operating logic: a defensive line, a midfield structure and a front line. From the 2-3-5 pyramid to the W-M, from the W-M to the 4-4-2, and from the 4-4-2 to the 4-3-3, every change has been a response to a rule, a tactical gap or a conditioning capacity. The 1925 offside law moved the centre-half back. The Premier League era's possession-based attacking models made the second striker harder to defend with a flat back four. The pressing models of the 2010s made a stable midfield base essential for sides that wanted to recover possession high up the pitch.

The tactical analyst's task is not to crown a winner. It is to describe the geometry of the press, the height of the defensive line, the pitch location of the recovery, and the shooting profile of the chances that follow.
